When I first decided I wanted to study abroad, I had no idea where I wanted to go. All I knew is that I wanted to go somewhere I’ve never been before. So I think I followed my heart, and that led me to Italy. For those that know me, you know food is a major way to my heart and something I think about often, so I knew my heart was at home with Italy! Then came choosing which city. I was able to connect with some friends about their experiences abroad, and did some more research on my own, and I finally decided on Florence! I didn’t know much about the rich art, history, food- that Florence and Italy came with but I think that’s also what excited me about the journey I was embarking on.
As I write these words to share my experience, it brings back so many memories! I remember seeing the Duomo for the first time, and crossing the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno river. I got to go on gelato tours and take wine tasting classes. Through my classes, I was able to visit the finest art museums like the Uffizi Gallery, and visit the Eternal City, Roma. I loved my daily walks up and down my hill, and it became a tradition to get our morning cappuccinos at the local café. My friends and I planned trips to visit Paris for a day, we got to go to Oktoberfest in Munich, and saw a concert in Amsterdam. I got to meet David by Michelangelo, took cooking classes, and went to my first opera. I miss visiting my favorite square the most, Piazza della Repubblica. I’m so grateful for the immense support and love from my family and friends that helped make this happen!
The decision to study abroad allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture, rich history, and delicious cuisine. I was so nervous to leave Colorado State University because it was my senior year and I met so many amazing people in my time at CSU. Through my friendships and experiences both at CSU and abroad, it all led me to where I am today, and even helped me embrace and grow my love personally for my culture. It’s safe to say I was scared of the things I would miss out at home, but I was more scared of the regret I’d have if I didn’t go! There’s so much we don’t know, and so much we won’t until we take the chance and do it. So if you’re considering exploring what our world has to offer, do it, and the rest will follow! While my Italian isn’t that great anymore, I’m so proud of myself for taking the chance.
